This is London was first launched way back in the mid-nineties as a digital presence for the Evening Standard newspaper. However, the site had become so popular that the original This is London design and underlying architecture struggled to fulfil the demands of its increasingly internet savvy audience, thus a major redesign was commissioned!

One of the more interesting challenges faced when redesigning This is London was to work out how to maintain its existing character and identity but with a brand new look and feel. The goal was to upgrade the whole user experience and feature set without disrupting the existing user base, which was always going to be a fine balancing act.
In combating the potential pitfalls in changing a very successful site we paid close attention to the users voice by engaging them in focus groups and card sorting sessions. We also developed a range of personas in which to test key user journeys against. On top of that the site went through rigorous usability tests to confirm that we were indeed improving the experience for our loyal audience.
This is London now utilises content from both the Evening Standard newspaper as well as the more recent London Lite free evening newspaper as the definitive digital base for those who live, work, play and visit the world's most exciting and vibrant city.
This is London now has unique visitors of over 800,000 with page impressions topping the 7.5 million mark. The site has also been critically acclaimed in my time there by winning the Regional Press Awards website of the year award back in 2004.
